AHMEDABAD: Gujarat governor Acharya Devvrat has accepted the invitation to become the next chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith, the 102-year-old deemed university founded by Mahatma Gandhi.
Sources in the Gujarat Vidyapith trustees’ body said the governing council had decided to extend the invitation to Devvrat on October 4. They confirmed that he has accepted the offer and formalities will be underway soon.
Devvrat will be eligible to hold the chancellor’s post for life, even after he ceases to be the governor, sources said.
On October 4, the governing council had accepted resignation of Ela Bhatt as chancellor. Bhatt is a Gandhian, a world-renowned social activist, and founder of Sewa (Self Employed Women’s Association). Bhatt will officially step down on October 19.
