The country observes the Indian Air Force Day on October 8. The Air Force was officially raised as the supporting force of the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom in 1932.
On this day, the Indian Air Force shows its strength, for which it makes advanced preparations.
Every year, the Indian Air Force Day is celebrated at Hindon Air Force Station, which is the largest air base in Asia. Preparations are underway at the Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh to celebrate the 90th Indian Air Force Day. This year’s celebration is historic as it is the first time the event will be hosted outside the National Capital Region.
The celebrations will be held in the presence of the IAF chief and senior officials of the three-armed forces. A parade will be held at the IAF station in the morning. Later in the day, the flypast at Sukhna Lake will be presided over by President Droupadi Murmu. Defence minister Rajnath Singh will also be present on the occasion.
About 83 aircrafts will take part in the flypast putting up a dazzling show of some vivid and varying formations. The aircraft that will take part in the air show will include 44 fighter aircraft, 7 transport aircraft, 20 helicopters and 7 vintage aircraft. At the same time, 9 aircraft will be kept on standby.
Aircraft fighters like MiG-21, MiG-29, Su-30, Mirage 2000, Jaguar, Tejas and Rafale, while other aircraft including the C-17, C-130, IL-76, AN-32, Embraer AWACS, Mi-17, Apache, Mi-35, Dhruv and Chinook will display different formations at the flypast.
The formations include Akashganga, Ensign, Eklavya, Trishul, Mehar, Shamsher, Vajra, Sarang, Suryakiran among others.
The ‘globe’ formation, comprising a C-17 heavy-lift aircraft trailed by nine Hawk-132 jet trainers from the Surya Kiran display team and joint aerial manoeuvring by a Rafale, Su-30 and Tejas in the ‘transformer’ formation are other attractions of the air show.
Formations will also include ‘Sekhon’ named after IAF Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Sekhon who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
The programme will start at 2.30 pm and conclude at 5 pm. “All fighters including Su-30 MKI, Tejas and Rafale will take part in the event. Similarly, transport aircraft like IL 76 and C-130s, and helicopters except the Avro, Dornier, Chetak and Cheetah will participate,” said the spokesperson. The event will be started by the IAF’s Akash Ganga skydiving team. It will be followed by Chinook helicopter undertaking manoeuvring and underslung operations.
Newly-inducted Prachand combat helicopter (indigenous light combat helicopter) will be among 80 fighters, transport aircraft and helicopters that will participate in the air show.
