CHIKKAMAGALURU: A coffee estate owner and his son were booked for allegedly wrongfully confining a group of labourers, mostly from SC/ST communities, and assaulting them for their failure to repay the amount borrowed from them, on Tuesday.
Balehonnur police registered a case against Jagdeeshgowda and his son Thilak of Hunasehalli in Chikkamagaluru taluk, under various provisions of IPC Sections 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (Punishment for wrongful confinement) and Section 3(2) (v) in the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
According to the Police complaint by Arpitha, one of the victims, Jagadeeshgowda and Thilak assaulted and abused her, and her husband Vijay and other labourers including their relatives for the delay in repayment of the loan amount. The owner has been accused of locking them inside the “workers’ quarters” where they were staying.
Arpitha said, there was a clash between Vijay’s relatives and other labourers in the estate over the issues concerning children, two weeks ago. Jagadeeshgowda had assaulted one of the relatives and since then they stopped working in the estate. Then, the owner asked the workers to repay the loan amount. On October 8, the owner visited the labour quarters and questioned the repayment of the loan and abused Arpitha and Vijay.
However, the family members of Jagadeeshgowda denied the allegations and said the labourers had borrowed Rs 9 lakh loan from them promising to work in their estate but they weren’t attending work regularly. Instead, workers started working in other estates and also at meat shops. Thus, the owner questioned the labourers and asked them to vacate the quarters after repaying the loan.
Chikkamagaluru superintendent of police Uma Prashant said the accused are still absconding.
